Parent theme

When you work with WordPress there are parent theme and child themes. Parent theme is a theme where you use all the functions in a child theme, but in the child theme are you changing the design.

When working with child themes, it is important to choose a good parent theme. When you choose a parent theme, choose one that have much functionality.
Choose a parent theme, where you are not editing all files. A child theme are used if you need the functionality, features and awesomeness. If you want tot change the whole site, then make a cutsom theme.

When working with themes in WordPress, you must also work with child themes.
Child themes helps you when the parent theme have updates. If you use a child theme will the updates not effect it. It will only effect the parent theme. the child theme will prevent design changes when updating and can prevent the site for crashing.
Child themes is a way for designers and developers to create new designs that inherit the functionality of a parent theme.

Download the plugin

First thing you need to to is download the child theme here


Activate the plugin

Activate the plugin by clicking Activate


Analyze the parent theme

When you have found your theme, you must make a child theme. You under Tools > child themes
Here can you find all the settings for your child theme. To analyze if you can make a child theme, choose create new child theme under proces 1.
In proces 2 you must chosse which parent theme you want to analyze and click the button Analyze


Make the child theme

If the parent theme can be used to make a child theme, will the plugin give you a messages, says it can be used, if not, you must find different theme. If it can be used go to the button of the site and click Make a new child theme


Copy the files from the parent theme

You have now made a child theme, but by default has it only one file, the rest is of the files are using the parent theme files. To prevent this go under files under child theme.
There you must choose all files. You must do this to make a copy to the child theme. You can now change the files in the child theme and prevent the parent theme to change your site, when it gets an update.


Change the theme

Right now have you the parent theme activated, therefore must you change the theme to the child theme.


Edit the child theme

You can edit the child themes files. To do that go to Apperence > Theme editor here you get an overview of all the files on the site

Create a child theme folder

First, create a new folder in your themes direcory, located at wp-content/themes.
Give it a name. The best name would be the same as the parent, but add -child

Create a stylesheet

Now you have made the folder. The next you need to add is a stylesheet. Call it style.css. There you must have all the CSS rules that control your theme.
You must add a header comment at the very top of the file. This tells WordPress basic info about the theme

Install the child theme

Install the child theme as you install any other theme. You can copy the folder to the site using FTP, or create a zip file of the child theme folder, choosing the option to maintain folder structure, and click on Appearance > Themes > Add New to upload the zip file.

Active the theme

You can se it under themes, where you can active it as an other theme

Add template files

When you active it, can you see that it is not pretty, bu that is because you have not changed anything it the stylesheet.
You can ass more files beside the function.php file (any file you add to your child theme will overwrite the same file in the parent theme.
The best way is to copy the parent template files, and change them in the child theme.
